From Homelessness to Hope

Benjamin’s Hands Foundation was born out of lived experience.

In 2019, Garrett and Misty Sweat moved to Ogden, Utah, working toward a better future. Garrett enrolled in college while Misty worked in a factory. Like many families, they were building their life together—until the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. Illness, job loss, and shutdowns quickly unraveled the stability they had worked so hard to create.

By 2020, they lost their apartment and eventually everything they owned—their home, their car, and their sense of security. With missing identification documents and most services shut down during the pandemic, finding work or help became nearly impossible. Garrett and Misty found themselves experiencing homelessness on the streets of Salt Lake City.

During that time, they saw firsthand how difficult it is to escape homelessness. Day labor was often the only work available, meals were uncertain, and shelters were not always safe places for people trying to rebuild their lives.

But even in the middle of that struggle, Garrett refused to give up. While staying in a homeless shelter, he worked toward earning his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), determined to create a path back to stability.

Through perseverance, faith, and support from family, Garrett and Misty were eventually able to rebuild their lives. In 2024, Garrett reconnected with his birth mother, who welcomed them into her home and helped provide the stability they needed to move forward.

Out of that journey came a calling.

They created Benjamin’s Hands Foundation to help others facing the same struggles they once endured. Today the foundation works to meet people where they are—providing practical help, resources, and hope to those experiencing homelessness.

Because no one should be unseen, and everyone deserves a chance to find their way forward.
